Recent heavy rains have raised the water level at Dry Branch Creek so high that the shopping carts embedded in the creek are not visible. Instead of removing carts from the creek this Sunday as originally planned, volunteers will focus their efforts on clearing access point to the creek and removing brush and trash along the creek banks. The actual cart cleanup will be rescheduled once the water level drops.
Anyone interested in helping clear access to the creek should park at Ivy Tech or Schnuck’s and walk to the Popeye’s parking lot to sign a waiver and receive instructions. Volunteers are urged to wear rubber boots or work boots, and bring winches, shovels and rakes. Trash bags and gloves will be provided.
About 60 shopping carts litter the creek that runs under First Avenue and behind several businesses on the city’s North Side.
